Are silver fillings still used?

Dental Filling is a method used to restore teeth that are damaged by tooth decay. In this method, the decayed portion of the tooth is removed and is cleaned. The cleaned-out cavity is then filled with a filling material. The filling material used for filling includes gold, porcelain, composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), and Amalgam fillings.

Amalgam fillings are otherwise known as silver fillings. Amalgam fillings are a mixture of silver, mercury, tin, and copper. Amalgam fillings or silver fillings which have been in use since 1895 have become obsolete and out of use. The more common materials that are in use these days are composite fillings. Composite fillings are tooth-colored and hence they blend with our teeth more naturally. The flexibility of composite filling resin reduces the amount of tooth portion that needs to be drilled.
